Fitness Monitor

Fitness Monitors have good communication skills and are friendly, professional, and willing to learn. Applicants with exercise or sport background receive preferred consideration.

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD
August to May. Option of working during summer and breaks.

PAY RATE AND INCENTIVES
  • $5.50 per hour
  • Free Membership to the Cornell Fitness Centers after basic staff training.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Fitness Monitors must work at least 4 hours per week for the entire academic year. All monitors must have current CPR certification and First Aid certification from the American Red Cross. Certification must be obtained before working scheduled shifts and within the first month of employment. An active e-mail account is also necessary.

JOB DUTIES
  • Ensure the fitness center is a safe environment for members
  • Circulate on the exercise floor and assist participants
  • Understand and enforce all CFC policies and procedures in a firm, fair, and consistent manner
  • Feel comfortable using and demonstrating all the equipment
  • Clean the fitness center and equipment.
  • Answer questions and be able to direct comments or questions to the right people
  • Attend mandatory and optional staff training classes
  • Be familiar with CFC emergency procedures and be confident in their implementation
  • Report broken or out of order equipment using established procedures
  • Provide appropriate music to keep guests motivated
  • Follow opening and closing procedures
  • Have Fun!

Aerobics Instructor

Lead cardiovascular fitness classes. Instructors must feel comfortable in front of a group and be able to teach proper form and alignment for exercises dynamically.

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD
August to May. Option of working during summer and breaks.

PAY RATE AND INCENTIVES
  • $8.00 per hour (Pay raises based on merit).
  • Free Membership to the Cornell Fitness Centers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Current CPR certification, First Aid certification and an active e-mail account.

JOB DUTIES
  • Arrive to class 10 minutes early with tapes cued, choreography ready, and dressed for teaching.
  • Collect aerobic tickets.
  • Follow class format as outlined in the instructor manual.
  • Fill out incident reports when necessary.
  • Check e-mail twice a week!
  • Teach a safe, effective and fun class to all participants following guidelines set in manual.
  • Record attendance after EACH class.
  • Attend all meetings and training sessions.
  • Wear Fitness Staff T-Shirt before and after class.
  • Wear clothing that allows participants to see proper form and alignment.
  • Return all equipment to proper spot and put away neatly. Lock all necessary facilities.

Fitness Technician

Repairs and performs basic maintenance of equipment with complex moving parts and sophisticated electronic equipment with minimal supervision. This position includes, but is not limited to: inspecting, lubricating and cleaning as well as repairing or reporting needed repairs.

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD
August to May. Option of working during summer and breaks.

PAY RATE AND INCENTIVES
  • $6.50 per hour
  • Free Membership to the Cornell Fitness Centers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Basic knowledge of hand tools required. Some training will be provided.

JOB DUTIES
  • Inspect equipment regularly for damage problems.
  • Clean and lubricate equipment according to machine specifications.
  • Perform equipment repairs as needed.
  • Report jobs that are beyond standard maintenance and repair to professional staff.
  • Follow a regular preventive maintenance inspection program.
  • For resistance training equipment:
    • Check welds and welded joints for metal fatigue or damage.
    • Test cables including crimps, ferrules, attachments, fastners; check nylon coatings.
    • Adjust ables where necessary to permit proper range of motion.
    • Tighten loose nuts and bolts; replace or report any that are missing or broken.
    • Inspect moving bushings, bearing, etc., for excessive wear or damage.
    • Inspect upholstered surfaces for excessive wear or damage.
    • Degrease and re-lubricate plate guide-rods, bushings, and moving assemblies as needed.
    • Clean excess oil, dirt, and griime from weight stacks.
  • For cardiovascular equipment:
    • Inspect welds, joints, cables, belts, pulleys, springs, and chains.
    • Check upholstery for excessive wear and damage.
    • Lubricate chains and moving parts as necessary.
    • Remove treadmill motor cover and clean dust from motor electronics.
    • Calibrate and align asemblies as required by manufacturer's specifications.

Student Coordinator

Duties require individual to assist professional staff with scheduling and training for student staff as well as in the development of special programming. In addition, work three contact hours at a facility.

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD
August to May. Option of working during summer and breaks.

PAY RATE AND INCENTIVES
  • $7.50 per hour
  • Free Membership to the Cornell Fitness Centers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Current CPR certification, First Aid certification and an active e-mail account. Previous experience with the program required. 15-20 hours per week.

JOB DUTIES
  • Weekly meeting with professional staff.
  • Weekly meeting with direct supervisor.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings.
  • Act as a liaison between student and professional staff members.
  • Assist professional staff with administrative duties.
  • Assist with development of special events.
  • Schedule over 100 fitness monitors, instructors, and Supervisors at all six facilities.
  • Assist in staff training.
  • Responsible for finding staff replacements and shift substitutes.
  • Assist in development of special events.
